Why 20 Group Benchmarking Doesn't Work for Smaller Multi-Brand Groups

By Shaun Yan

If you run a multi-rooftop dealer group, you've probably looked at joining a 20 Group, a peer benchmarking format where dealers compare performance and get outside perspective on where they stand. It's a genuinely useful format. It's also not built for groups like yours.

The structural gap

20 Groups are typically organized by brand, a group of Ford dealers benchmarking against other Ford dealers, a group of Hyundai dealers against other Hyundai dealers. That works well if you own one brand across multiple stores. It works much less well if you're a smaller multi-brand group, a Ford, a Hyundai, and a Chevrolet store under one ownership, for example, because there's no peer group built around your specific mix. Unless you're large enough or public enough to run your own private group, the internal, cross-store visibility a 20 Group is supposed to provide isn't really available to you.

Annual 20 Group membership typically runs $10,000 to $25,000 per store per year, usually covering a handful of in-person meetings and periodic composite reports in between meetings.

What we built instead

Dealer IntelX is modeled on the same idea, a real composite view of how every store in your group is performing, department by department, with a structured leadership review, but private to your own ownership group instead of organized by brand across competing dealers. It includes a live dashboard, a monthly manager-submitted spreadsheet, a full department-by-department review, and action plans, on a monthly cadence rather than a few times a year.

If you're a multi-brand group that's never quite fit into the traditional 20 Group model, this is built for exactly that gap.
